The following link is of a field recording I did at one of our potential sites, the roof outside of the fourth floor (near the Design Studio and Visual Media within Central). It lasts for over 20 minutes and gives quite an interesting perspective of the space. Present in it are the sounds of the traffic on Finchley Road as well as the sounds coming from the school (including students walking through the gravel below and others talking on the various balconies nearby). 4’33″ at the Barbican

The following link is to a recording of a staging of 4’33″ at the Barbican in 2004. It is interesting to note that because the audience is clearly familiar with the piece, they change it in quite a big way. They understand that the three sections are free from intentional sound creation and as a result they attempt to refrain from creating sounds themselves. However, the audience sees the breaks as a time that is free from the preceding rule and as such they let off a cacophony of rustles, chatter and coughs. Because of this, they create quite a different piece and make the breaks quite interesting to those viewing this recording. We think Cage would have smiled at this treatment. To whom it may concern, an introduction to our piece, 4’33″:

Based on John Cage’s symphony of the same name, this piece will be conducted at different times in three different spaces. It is a journey of investigation into the ever-changing soundscapes that surround us. We will both perform 4’33”, which is an experimental work, and use it as a stimulus for generating further performance material.

The devising process will culminate in a series of performances across the two week festival period. This will represent our studies into three spaces deemed by the company as sonically interesting. These performances will rely on the strengths of the company members, covering the MAATP Sound Design and Dramaturgy strands as well as members from MA PPR and Movement Studies. As such one piece will be movement-oriented.
